E-Mail #16 Mac & Sheep (Morgan Takeover)

Hello everyone!!

Unfortunately, yet again, you have been deprived of Ella and given someone else for a week. This week it’s being taken over by me, Morgan, a pal of Ella’s from Glasgow, Scotland. I met Ella a number of years ago now on the grand ol’ internet where we crossed over Harry Potter, Sherlock, the colour yellow and a bunch of other embarrassing things.

Sticking with the non-embarrassing for now, I would like to make this week a perspective opener on the internet from a Scottish perspective. Not that different from yours, but fuck it, let’s see where it takes me.

Video Corner

So, I’m sure everyone knows this video. But, this video always makes me laugh. Why? The ‘Fuck off, Ally’ is so tired, so completely done with Ally that he’s telling him now to fuck off. Ye’ve just been hit by a bus Ally, want to just fuck off man???

Reviews

Sticking with the Scottish theme, gonna review some Scottish cakes, biscuits and confectionery!! My ultimate favourites that I would implore any traveller to stop and peruse for the full Scottish experience.

Starting with a strong contender for best biscuit in the world; The Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer.

Sweet baby Jesus. The caramel between the wafer sets up for a chewy wonder but the wee layer of chocolate upgrades this to a miracle. This really could set your afternoon up to be a stunner.

Following that with something I only recently found out was Scottish; An Empire Biscuit. Lots of places have different variations, but this is completely ours. And completely irreplaceable. And completely and utterly delicious.

Two soft biscuits with raspberry or strawberry jam between them are iced and the crowning glory is either half a cherry, or, more commonly, a gumdrop.

And of course, neither the two of these would be even close to perfection if they weren’t married up to the daddy of them all; a beautiful can of Irn Bru. I’m sure most of you will know what the cans are like, but did you know that Irn Bru love to toe the line when it comes to their marketing campaigns? Their television adverts have long suffered numerous complaints from the more prim of society, as have the adverts on the back of the lorry doors. But as they say, the Bru must get through.

Tweet of The Week

The only things you need in life is sheep and wheat

SONG CRUSH:

So this week my faves released a new album. They’re called The Twilight Sad and are a) Scottish and b) Miserable. It’s the only two things you need to know. Want to know a third? The lead singer's dad is great and brings wet wipes to gigs in case the audience need any.

This new album has somehow managed to get into the UK top album charts and we’re hoping they can make it to the weekend!! Anyways, here’s one of the new singles called VTr.

Fourth? Lead singer James is a total babe #HeartEyes

Good News

Good news everyone!! There has been an unexpected development in the search for a cure for Alzheimers! A microbiologist has proposed the idea that Alzheimers could stem from gum disease, or at least, it could be a large contributing factor! Very interesting reading, and definitely something to watch out for in the future!

Movie Mention

The last movie I saw was Aquaman and it definitely deserves an honourable mention. Apart from Jason Momoa looking TOIT throughout the whole thing, it was haunted by the feeling of being squeezed. No, not squeezing Jason, but the feeling that the writers and production team met up and said, ‘Right, chances of us getting an Aquaman 2 are slim… just… put it all in, get it all in, start to finish, fire it in the movie, quick, just - just stuff it in-”. Plot point after plot point after plot point, this movie was definitely not short for things happening. Character relationship plot, mysterious underwater extended family, possible royalty, peripheral bad guy, underwater bad guy, treasure map, Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider level temple scouting, alongside lost mothers and finale war scene, it’s definitely not a boring 2 and a bit hours but it certainly is long. Still good though, a hot 4/5 from moi.

Netflix Natter

This week on Netflix for me has been a mixed bag. Last Friday Star Trek Discovery returned for the first episode of the second series and Hot Damn if it wasn’t an absolutely mind blowing beginning. If you’re a big Trek fan like me, you’ll already be all around this, but if not you’re missing out on an excellent show about the best of humanity. Not to mention a largely diverse cast - aliens included. The first Captain of the Discovery was the treasured Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, The OA (watch the OA, it’ll fuck you up)), but devious Captain Lorca (Isaacs) has been followed by the esteemed Captain Christopher Pike!! When I first heard the news we were getting Captain Pike back to our screens, it was trepidation and excitement. Bruce Greenwood did a lot of work on dear Pike in the 2009 and 2013 (of which reincanation of Star Trek shall not be named for crimes against the Trek Universe) adaptations of the Original Star Trek. However, Anson Mount (Inhumans), has so far filled the Captains chair with - in Jason Isaac’s words - firm buns. And he’s not wrong.

Also watched You. Which has been very divisive and it’s clear why. As an audience you move in the perspective of a stalker, hearing their thoughts as narration. The perspective is to initiate sympathy, to give you an understanding of why he does what he does. Worth a watch, but be careful of your empathy.

Lastly on Netflix this week was Ghost Stories. A movie about a man who has spent his life debunking supernatural tales, especially fake psychics. That is, until he is called to visit a man he had looked up to in his field and asked by him to debunk three cases that he could not. This takes our leading man down the path of three terrifying tales of night watchmen locked in a room with something else, a young boy demented by his overcontrolling parents and the fact that he mowed down the devil in his father's audi, and lastly, a father with a poltergeist in the baby’s room. The ending is unexpected and makes you question whether it’s even the truth. I think I was disappointed because I initially thought it was a comedy and it was just a scary film, but if you know it’s meant to be a scary film and you’re not looking for the comedy, I think it would be a good watch. Watch with the lights off and in the dark for the full effect.

Things (Ella) Made (in the past for me)

Unfortunately since I am nowhere near as creative as our lovely Ella, I haven’t made anything this week at all, but instead I am going to show you some of the beautiful cards Ella has made for me that you might not have been able to see normally!

Thank you for taking the time to read through what was almost a 30 page long star trek review! Apologies for the intentions to keep this Scottish and then having other content get the better of me. Next week Ella will be back and shaking this up and getting back in the groove. I hope I did okay!

Thanks for reading!!

Ella Returns

Hello again, and thank you Morg for this beautiful lad and Scottish filled entry! Morgan always teaches me Scot stuff so it's nice to share the wisdom. Also so many things to watch! Morg and I have polar opposite taste so it's always refreshing to see what she's watching.

If you want to see what Morgan is upto elsewhere, find her on Twitter and Instagram

I hope you all have a nice weekend now, get wrapped up warm because it's too bloody cold in the UK.

See you next time!
